If you’re hosting a Harry Potter party or themed event, Hogwarts letter party invitations are probably one of the number one items on your todo list. But how can you make invitations that look the most authentically like a Hogwarts Letter if you don’t have a quill pen and ink bottle handy?

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial.

Designing Hogwarts Letter Party Invitations

There are plenty online templates you can use to create Hogwarts letter vibes, and there’s nothing wrong with using those resources! I wanted to design some invitations myself though, because I wanted to customize exactly what they were going to say (and because I’m a font snob from working in marketing for so many years).

If you find yourself struggling to design custom documents in Microsoft Word, I recommend trying Canva.com. It’s completely free (unless you opt for a paid account with more fonts and graphics) and its extremely user-friendly. I use it at my full-time job to create social media graphics and other marketing materials, but it also really comes in handy for crafting at home.

Just make a free Canva account, choose an 8.5×11 design template, start typing your custom Hogwarts letter into a text box!

Writing Your Hogwarts Letter

Here is the text I used for both pages of my Hogwarts letter party invitations. Feel free to copy it and customize it for your own party. I took most of it straight out of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

I found a png (transparent background) picture of the Hogwarts crest on the internet and added that to the top of each page as well. Just make sure you only do that if you’re making the invitations for fun! Selling something with the Hogwarts logo printed on it would violate major copyright laws.

Perfectly Printed

When you’re happy with your letter, you can print it off on some parchment-style paper. I found this tan printer paper for just $0.25 at Hobby Lobby, and it worked perfectly. If you have access to a paper cutter, scrapbook paper would also work. If your paper has a design on one side but is plain white on the back like mine was, make sure you flip it upside down before loading it into the printer. I learned that the hard way!

Signed, Sealed, and Delivered

For the final touch of realism, I left Professor McGonagall’s signature blank when I printed off my letters. I then took a black ballpoint pen and copied her signature as best I could from the books.

I found a cute owl stamp for just $1 at Target, so I dipped that in some green ink and stamped in on the front of the envelope.

I hand delivered the invitations to our friends so it would appear as though an owl swooped in and dropped each letter off.
