You’ve perfected your menu, you’ve decorated your house from top to bottom, and you’re all dressed up in your house robes. Your guests are on their way, and Harry Potter party is about to begin. But wait what are you going to do once they get here???

Never fear, your friendly blogger nerd is here! I’ve got 7 ideas for Harry Potter party games that will delight kids and adults alike.

I like to categorize my Harry Potter party games like Hogwarts classes. It adds some extra authenticity and creativity to the evening, and it puts a magical Potter twist on some old favorites. Here are the classes your Hogwarts students can enjoy this term.

Harry Potter Party Games for Hogwarts Classes

 1. Defeat a boggart in Defense Against the Dark Arts.

In other words, play charades, but make it Harry Potter! Write out 30-50 creatures and characters from the series onto small pieces of paper. Dump them into a wizard hat or whatever container you have handy and mix them up. Have guests draw piece and act it out while everyone tries to guess who or what they are.

2. Study the Ancient Runes.

This one is pictionary, but make it Harry Potter. This is a little bit more tame if your guests are too shy to act out hippogriffs and basilisks in charades. If you want to play both games, you can repurpose the same list from the boggart or make a new one to keep things interesting.

3. Test your knowledge in History of Magic.

Play a Harry Potter trivia game! Find trivia questions at the difficulty level of your choice on the internet. Have a moderator read them out, and have guests write their answers down on a piece of paper like a History of Magic test (or, you know, like pub trivia). You can ask guests to break up into teams, or challenge them on their own. Give the person who gets the most questions right a small prize!

4. Stir up a sleeping draught or bottle up luck in Potions.

At our adults-only Harry Potter party, we made cocktails for Potions class. You can find the recipe our friend Spencer created for an Amortentia Love Potion Cocktail in this post. If your party guests are kids, I recommend making little potion bottles as a craft! It’s so much fun, and it would make the coolest party favor. You can find a Harry Potter potion bottle tutorial here.

5. Re-pot some mandrakes or other rare magical plants in Herbology.

Another fun souvenir idea: little succulents. Find some cool mini planters at thrift stores, and stock up on succulents at Home Depot or Lowes. Let guests choose their succulent and pot it to take home.

6. Test your agility on the Quidditch pitch.

Ask each of your guests to bring a broom with them to the party. Place six hula hoops on the ground in your backyard, 3 on each end like goals. Divide your guests into two teams, and watch them try to score a “quaffle” (volleyball spray painted red) into the hula hoops while holding onto and riding a broomstick! Hide a “snitch” (golf ball spray painted gold) somewhere in the yard and challenge a play form each team to find it. The game ends when the snitch is found, and it’s worth 150 points to the team that finds it.

7. Hunt for Horcruxes.

Hide little replicas of the Horcruxes around your house (a cool notebook for Tom Riddle’s diary, a ring, a locket, a beanie baby snake, a crown for Ravenclaw’s diadem, a cool cup for Hufflepuff’s goblet, etc). Guests can find them as a scavenger hunt activity, and whoever finds one gets to keep it as a party favor!
