Live performances are back at last, and there are some fantastic shows coming to Dallas next year!

This fall, Dallas County’s locally produced musical theatre organization Lyric Stage invited us to celebrate their return to the spotlight. We heard talented performers belt out classic Broadway tunes in the gorgeous Majestic Theater downtown. It was a night to remember! Here’s what our experience was like, and an overview of the shows Lyric Stage will perform throughout their 2022 season.

The Best of Broadway

We attended The Best of Broadway: A Pops Concert on opening night, October 29. We had never visited the Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas before, and we were blown away when we walked through the doors! The glamorous 1920s architecture embossed with gold and punctuated with glittering chandeliers transported us back in time. The Majestic just celebrated its 100th birthday, and Lyric’s Best of Broadway concert was the perfect celebration of beloved songs throughout history.

The show kicked off with songs from the 20s and 30s, like Anything Goes and Summertime. As the evening progressed, so did the musical theater eras. We heard songs from West Side Story, Cabaret, Annie, Cats, Les Mis, Phantom of the Opera, and more on our journey through 20th century favorites. The show concluded with nods to modern musicals like Wicked, Frozen, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hamilton.

The performers were outstanding — truly some of the best vocal talent I have ever seen live! I was especially excited to hear “Memory” from Cats, one of my absolute favorite songs and some of the creative remixes, like the mashup of “Let It Go” from Frozen and “Defying Gravity” from Wicked. The show also included previews from each of the upcoming shows next season: Ragtime, Cabaret, and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

Upcoming Lyric Stage Shows

Here is the 2022 season schedule for Lyric Stage.

Ragtime

February 17 – 20, 2022

“Set in the volatile melting pot of turn-of-the-century New York, and based on E.L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel, Ragtime confronts history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

May 12 – 15, 2022

“Set in Ancient Rome, Forum is a nonstop, musical laugh-fest that combines the 2000-year-old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville.”

Cabaret

June 9 – 12, 2022

“Set in Berlin as the 1920’s draw to a close, and based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera and Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, Cabaret focuses on the hedonistic nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, while exploring the dark and tumultuous life in Germany as the Third Reich ascends to power.”
