Although I love the succulent craze going on right now and think the tiny little plants are so cute, I’ve never had much of a green thumb when it comes to planting things or keeping them alive. But after an evening learning from an instructor at Plant & Sip, I am actually hopeful that I might not be the plant grim reaper after all!

Austin and I decided to try something creative for a date night recently. We signed up to dine at Blue Mesa Grill in Addison while we planted our very own succulent terrariums through Plant & Sip DFW. The concept for Plant & Sip is similar to Painting With a Twist: you join a group of other tentative creators and try your best at a project while you eat, drink, and socialize.

Here’s what to expect when you book an evening with Plant & Sip.

Gather Your Supplies

When you walk in to a Plant & Sip event, you’ll see one table stocked with supplies for your terrarium and another with place settings for each amateur gardener. All of the supplies are included in the price of your ticket. Tie on an apron and pick out your favorite planter to get started. For our Plant & Sip experience, the planters were little rustic crates with pictures of produce and flowers on the sides for a country look.

Listen to Your Instructor

Before you start digging, listen carefully to your instructor! Our lovely instructor explained how to properly transplant our succulents without damaging their delicate roots and gave us tips for taking care of them after we took them home. She also taught everyone the history of terrariums and rewarded good listeners with door prizes.

Plant…and Sip!

Plant your succulents in their new terrarium home and choose colorful rocks, moss, signs, and other props to decorate. Meanwhile, order a fun cocktail or some appetizers from the restaurant. The tables were set with free chips and salsa, but we also opted to try some of Blue Mesa’s signature menu items too.

Even though we all followed the same instructions for planting our succulents, no two terrariums looked the same.

Admire Your New Terrarium

My terrarium is on the left, and Austin’s is on the right! We loved the country vibes from the little picket fences and farm fresh signs. After we finished designing our terrariums to our hearts’ content, we spritzed them with some water for the journey home.

Plant & Sip is so much fun!

Instead of sitting across from your date over dinner plates and sticking to the same old conversation topics, at Plant & Sip you have the opportunity to bond and be creative together! Austin and I agreed that this would make a really unique first date idea. You don’t have to just take our word for it though, you can sign up for the next Plant & Sip event on their website!
