Have you ever eaten your favorite ice cream out of a waffle surrounded by a cloud of mist? It might sound like I’m describing heaven, but this dream can become your reality right here in DFW. One of the latest additions to the Dallas dessert scene has a whole new take on a classic treat.
Cauldron Ice Cream is a California-based business that just arrived in DFW this spring.Β Signature treats are churned with liquid nitrogen and served up in warm “puffle cones” designed to delight with every bite. Wondering whether or not it lives up to the hype? Here’s what you can expect from your visit to Cauldron.
Liquid Nitrogen
One of the things that makes dining at Cauldron Ice Cream such a unique experience is watching their staff churn up your dessert and freeze it with liquid nitrogen. A misty vapor billows from every mixing bowl and spills out onto the floor while onlookers snap photos. Aside from the fact that it looks like a super cool magic potion, the liquid nitrogen method supposedly creates a smoother, creamier texture. We definitely noticed that our ice cream had a custard-like consistency and we really enjoyed it.
Puffle Cones
Once your sweet treat is churned and flash frozen, it doesn’t just sit on top of an old fashioned waffle cone. Cauldron bakes bubbly waffles called “puffles” and stuffs them into triangular paper containers with your ice cream. They then carefully cut your dessert into the shape of a lovely rose.
Puffles come in three flavors: original, churro, and red velvet. We ordered the churro puffles and loved the extra punch of flavor from their cinnamon sugar. Based on pictures of the puffles, I expected them to be crunchy like a waffle cone. But they are actually soft and chewy like a breakfast waffle. They are served warm, which is a lovely contrast to the frigid ice cream.
Our Cauldron Ice Cream Review
I’m always a huge fan of photogenic desserts, but only if they really taste good too. We loved our Cauldron Ice Cream treats so much, we returned again the very next day and brought along a couple of our friends! Our favorite flavor so far was the classic Cauldron (cinnamon vanilla with Oreo crumbles on top) in a churro puffle. We want to come back to try Earl Gray Lavendar, and their seasonal flavor Thai Tea.
Cauldron Ice Cream is located at 3001 Knox St. Their hours are 11:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. on week nights and 11:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
