One of the loveliest places we visited on our recent Colorado weekend trip was the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House. On our way from Denver out to Rocky Mountain National Park, we stopped for brunch in Boulder, CO. Having seen lots of beautiful photos of the tea house on Instagram, I already had it on my Colorado weekend itinerary before we arrived.

Here’s an overview of the beautiful architecture, the delicious food, and the unique history tied to the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House.

The History of the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House

Boulder, Colorado’s sister city all the way across the world is Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The Boulder Dushanbe Tea House was a gift from Mayor Maksud Ikramov to celebrate the ties between the two cities.

The tea house was carefully hand carved and painted by more than 40 artisans from 1987 – 1990. Its style represents artistic tradition that dates back nearly 2,000 years. According to the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse website, in Central Asia, teahouses serve as gathering places where friends meet to talk or play chess over a cup of tea. Boulder’s tea house serves the same purpose as a gathering place for friends today.

What We Ate

We sampled both sweet and savory for our brunch time meal. We started off with piping hot mugs of chai tea. If you like chai lattes from your favorite coffee shop back home, you’ll love this heavenly, flavorful tea.

Austin loves breakfast food, so he ordered whole wheat chai pancakes with scrambled eggs and tea sausage patties. I tried the Korean pan fried noodles. We split St. James Cake for dessert. Everything was super tasty!

Visiting the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House

If you’re planning on driving up to Boulder, CO to see Pearl Street or stopping by on your way to Rocky Mountain National Park, stopping for food at the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House is a must.

We were only able to visit in the morning since we were heading up to Estes Park for the day, but if you arrive in the afternoon you can book a traditional tea service instead of ordering from the lunch or dinner menus.
