Austin and I always looking for new DFW dessert shops, and National Ice Cream Day offered us the perfect excuse to cool down with a cone last weekend. I discovered through social media that Baldo’s Ice Cream Shop was offering a buy one get one free deal on all of their ice cream products on Sunday, so we dashed downtown to try their scoops of homemade goodness.
The Vibe
Baldo’s is both an ice cream shop and a coffee shop. They serve locally sourced beans from the Austin area and a unique assortment of homemade ice cream flavors. The shop is located right next to SMU’s campus, and the atmosphere reminds me of one of my favorite coffee shops from college.
The Scoop
One of the most unique menu items at Baldo’s is call an ice cream “flight.” You can order three or six mini cones to experience more flavors of ice cream. Since we visited during their buy one get one free sale, we were able to purchase two flights with three cones each for just $7.
We loved the novelty of trying so many different flavors, and the tiny cones were just so cute!
The Flavors
The six flavors we tried at Baldo’s were Cookies ‘N Cream, Strawberry Milk, Banana Pudding, Toasted Coconut, S’mores, and Java Chip. Our favorites by far were Cookies ‘N Cream and Banana Pudding! Strawberry Milk was also excellent (and tastes distinctly creamier and milkier than just plain strawberry).
Austin told me very seriously that the Cookies ‘N Cream cone was the BEST ice cream he had ever tried. He loved it so much, he went back for a second larger cone!
The Verdict
We will definitely be back to Baldo’s! Austin is already having withdrawals and wants to return for his thrid Cookies ‘N Cream cone. Next time you’re looking for a place to cool down with a sweet treat under the Dallas sun, give Baldo’s a try!
