Austin and I have enjoyed the annual pumpkin patch at Blase Family Farm in Rockwall together every year since we got married as one of our favorite fall traditions. But this summer was the first year I made it over to the farm for their blueberry picking season in June!

I met up with my friend Katie Rose (from The Rose Table) for the most picture perfect summer morning strolling through the forrest on the farm grounds and grabbing great big bunches of ripe and juicy blueberries from the bushes. Here’s what it’s like to go blueberry picking at Blase Family Farm!

 

Reserve Your Blueberry Picking Time Slot

The blueberries at Blase Farm ripen for picking in batches, so they publish updates with available dates and time slots on their website periodically. Watch for announcements about the blueberry bushes on their social media, and then you can reserve your picking time to fit your schedule. The nice thing about this system is that it keeps crowds very low at the farm – perfect for enjoying row after row of blueberry plants and for taking pictures!

The season begins in June and typically lasts 4 – 6 weeks, so you will have plenty of opportunities to find a time slot that works for you.

 

Choose Your Blueberry Picking Container

Once you arrive at the farm during your time slot, you can choose what kind of container you want to use to hold your freshly picked berries. You can use a plastic sack for free or buy a cute blue plastic bucket in two different sizes. Since Katie Rose and I were “doing it for the gram,” we obviously decided to treat ourselves to the adorable blue buckets!

You can bring your buckets back with you on return trips to Blase Farm and use them again as many times as you want. Plus, they make a great souvenir!

 

Blueberry Picking at Blase Family Farm

Armed with our new buckets, we set off through the woods to the blueberry fields! We stopped for some pictures as the beautiful morning sunlight filtered through the trees.

Once we arrived at the bluberry bushes, Katie Rose showed me a few tricks for finding the ripest berries! She pulled them down from the top branches in big bunches.

After about 30 minutes of picking, we both had plenty of blueberries in our buckets that would be perfect for baking some delicious home made treats. It’s worth mentioning that all of the blueberry pushes at Blase Farm are organic and pesticide free. When you bite into one, you can immediately taste the difference from regular blueberries at the grocery store! Sweet, juicy, and fresh perfection.

 

Shopping at Blase Family Farm

At the end, we brought our blueberries to the cash register so they could be weighed. The blueberries cost $7 per pound. The Blase Farm also sells merch and some tasty treats, like creamy homemade fudge and blueberry popsicles! I grabbed a pop for myself and brought some home for Austin too.

I even used my farm fresh berries to decorate my July 4th American Flag Cake, and it turned out so perfectly!
