The Dallas area is lucky to have some pretty unique ice cream shops, where crazy flavors meet unique serving shapes. SomiSomi is no exception, and it is one of my absolute favorites!
SomiSomi Soft Serve and Taiyaki was founded in Los Angeles, CA in 2017 and first hit the Dallas metroplex in 2019. They serve a special Korean dessert known as Ah-Boong: a fish-shaped Taiyaki waffle cone filled with your choice of filling and topped with soft serve. Here’s what to expect when you visit SomiSomi Ice Cream.
SomiSomi Taiyaki
What makes SomiSomi unique are cute little fish-shaped waffles called Taiyaki. Batter is poured into a two-sided fish-shaped mold and cooked on both sides until it turns golden brown. Taiyaki can be served alone hot and filled with spreads like nutella, taro, custard, or red bean. You can order single waffles, or a whole box of these soft and fluffy treats.
Taiyaki can also be cut open and used as an ice cream cone in a combo treat called Ah-Boong. The warmth and texture of the waffle perfectly compliments the cold, sweet ice cream.
SomiSomi Soft Serve
SomiSomi rotates their soft serve menu through about 12 main flavors. They switch up which 6 or so flavors are available at each location each week so there’s always something new to try. They also select a couple of flavors to combine for weekly swirls, like Oreo and Milk. My personal favorites so far have been Ube, Coffee, and Milk Tea. The next flavor I want to try is Horchata!
You can eat your ice cream out of a Taiyaki waffle cone or in a bowl with a Taiyki perched on top. You can also add extra toppings like sprinkles, oreo crumbles, or fruity pebbles for free.
SomiSomi Locations
SomiSomi’s first DFW location is in Frisco at 9292 Warren Pkkwy. They just opened a new location this month in Carrollton at 2540 Old Denton Rd. The staff creates Taiyaki with special fish-shaped waffle irons at the front of the shop so customers can watch the process.
Right now during COVID-19 the total occupancy is limited to observe safe social distancing and masks are required inside. There are tables and benches outside where customers can safely sit 6 feet apart to eat their treats. The soft serve melts really fast, so make sure to bring plenty of napkins!
Try SomiSomi Ice Cream for Yourself
SomiSomi’s fun flavors and adorable Ah-Boong set it apart from the crowd in the Dallas ice cream scene. After discovering how delicious the combination of waffles and ice cream are together, I just keep coming back for more! So far my flavor recommendations are Milk Tea soft serve with Taro Taiyaki filling and Coffee soft serve with Nutella filling. My husband Austin recommends their Milk flavor with cereal topping.
