Did you know that DFW is home to USA Today’s Best Pie in Texas? You can order up an award-winning slice from Bonafide Betties Pie Shop in my hometown of Rockwall!
Even if you don’t normally venture far outside the Dallas city limits, I promise you Bonafide Betties Pie is worth the drive. Here’s what to expect from the #1 pie shop in Texas.
Visiting Bonafide Betties Pie Shop
If you’re planning your own trip to Bonafide Betties, you need to check on their store hours ahead of time on their Instagram account. Typically they are open only on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 – 4 p.m., but hours vary each week. Their pies are so popular that it isn’t uncommon for them to completely sell out of baked goods! Arrive early for the best chance at grabbing your flavor of choice.
The Bonafide Betties menu also changes from week to week, and sometimes includes extra goodies like cake or cookies. Follow along on Instagram for menu updates and mouth-watering daily pie pics.
An Ambiance As Sweet As Pie
Bonafide Betties Pie Shop is nestled between several other small businesses in Downtown Rockwall’s San Jacinto Plaza. It’s right across the street from an outdoor stage where musicians perform on summer evenings, so you can sit at one of the tables outside and enjoy some tunes while you dine.
Inside their space you’ll find plenty of whimsy: from a bright pink bicycle to flower-shaped chairs and neon lights to a wall of awards that these pies have scored throughout the years. If you like to share your food on Instagram (guilty) you’ll love the pretty setting Bonafide Pies offers your foodie moments.
Swoon-Worthy Slices
Since we were planning to write a review, my husband Austin and I ordered a wide variety of pie flavors. You know, for science.
My favorite by far was The Hot Mess: a classic buttermilk pie with pecan praline coconut topping. Austin devoured his pecan pie and we split some Texas Sheet Cake at home later. As a gift for a family member, we also picked up a slice of The Cherry Bomb: white chocolate custard pie filled with plump cherries. Everything was baked to perfection.
Each slice was just $5, so we thought a trip to the shop would make a lovely date night treat. Whole pies are $30 and seem like they would make excellent gifts for special occasions (Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, dare I say Valentine’s Day?) or even simply a nice addition to the family dinner table.
Flavorful Festivities
Since 2019, Bonafide Betties has co-hosted an annual Texas Pie Fest at Rockwall’s Tate Farms. Locals can enjoy a farmer’s market, a vintage car show, and LOTS of pie vendors at this year’s mini fest (which was down-sized and rescheduled due to COVID-19). The 2020 Texas Pie Fest will happen on July 18 from 8 a.m. to noon and is free to attend. You can find out more information on Instagram here.
So, what’s the verdict? Do you think Bonafide Betties Pie Shop serves up the best pies in the state of Texas? Try their treats and let me know what you think!
