Even though we love to explore all of the fun things to do right here in the Dallas metroplex, we get the itch to travel pretty frequently. This Labor Day weekend we desperately needed some relaxation, but we wanted to keep our travels budget-friendly since we have a longer vacation to Disney World coming up soon. We opted to visit the beautiful little historic town of Granbury, TX, located just 1.5 hours away from downtown Dallas.
At the end of our visit, we were so glad we chose Granbury for our weekend getaway! The area is so charming, and there were plenty of things to see and do but also plenty of down time to relax. Here is how we spent our weekend in Granbury, TX.
Check In at Iron Horse Inn Bed and Breakfast
We hadn’t ever stayed in a true bed and breakfast before, but we spotted pictures of the Iron Horse Inn online and we instantly fell in love. The inn was constructed as a home for a wealthy business man in 1905, and lots of the original architecture and flooring is still present in the building today. This is largely thanks to the efforts of the owners, Don and Diana McBride. The McBrides are passionate about preserving historic buildings, and the Iron Horse Inn is their sixth historic preservation project.
All of the rooms were beautiful, and we were particularly smitten with ours since it came with our own private balcony above the front porch. The living areas were so cozy and inviting, we were tempted to spend our mini vacation curled up on the couch with a good book.
Every morning at 9 a.m., guests are served a warm breakfast of quiche, potatoes, fresh fruit, and mouth-watering blueberry muffins. Everyone dines together at one long table like a family. We scarfed down our breakfast and left our plates clean.
Historic Downtown Granbury
We love hunting for interesting knickknacks in antique stores and scoping out new trends in local boutiques. Granbury was a perfect place to do both! The downtown square wraps around a beautiful clock tower, and lots of the shops and restaurants have maintained their historic architecture. Since we were visiting over Labor Day weekend, there was a street market with food and craft vendors in addition to the usual shops. We snacked on snow cones while we explored.
One of our favorite shops was Market on the Square, which had an entire room dedicated to Halloween decorations! They even decorated a brick orange Halloween tree with spooky ornaments.
Lake Granbury City Beach Park
Just a few minutes away from downtown Granbury you can find yourself tanning and swimming on a sandy beach! Lake Granbury’s City Beach Park is the perfect spot for a quiet picnic or some thrilling water sports. You can rent a kayak, bike beside the water, or play some sand volleyball. On Labor Day weekend, we enjoyed watching a lighted boat parade from the docks at night.
Antiques Galore
We couldn’t resist checking out a few wacky antique shops. If you like hunting for novelty pieces and restoring old-fashioned gadgets, Granbury is the place to be!
One of our favorite spots had a cluster of 3 different side-by-side antique malls for maximum treasure hunting. As we drove up, we were greeted by statues of dinosaurs, horses, and even Bigfoot.
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center
After spending our first day in downtown Granbury, TX, on our second day in the area we traveled 30 minutes away to the neighboring town of Glenrose. Glenrose, TX is home to Dinosaur Valley State Park, Big Rocks Park, and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. It was a sweltering 90+ degrees most of the weekend with occasional patches of rain, so we skipped the state parks this time. (But we hope to visit them on our next trip for sure!) Fossil Rim Wildlife Center was a must for us since we love animals, and we were able to stay safely inside our air conditioned car the whole time.
There are dozens of different animals roaming Fossil Rim, and it was so much fun to spot them galloping up to our car and feed them through the windows. Since giraffes are my favorite animals, feeding them was the highlight of the day for me.
Our drive through Fossil Rim took about 2 hours total. It was honestly one of the coolest experiences of our lives! We are really eager to become repeat customers at this nature preserve.
We loved our weekend in Granbury, TX!
You don’t have to roam far to experience exciting new adventures. Even though we were only a hop, skip, and a jump away from home in DFW, our trip to Granbury still felt like a perfect momentary escape from reality.
