No matter what form it takes, ice cream is always a good idea. But there is something really special about indulging in uniquely prepared food (especially in the Instagram era). The novelty of eating a dessert that is as beautiful as it is delicious is what makes the Chills 360 experience worth a try.
Chills 360 serves up “ice cream rolls” in three DFW locations: Deep Ellum (2646 Elm St), Rockwall (118 E Rusk St), and Fort Worth (1005 Foch St).
What are ice cream rolls?
Ice cream rolls, which are also commonly known as “stir-fried ice cream,” originated in Thailand less than a decade ago and have slowly gained popularity across the Western hemisphere. If you have never tried ice cream rolls before, photos of them can seem pretty mystifying. Here is what to expect when you decide to treat yourself to Chills 360.
Frozen in a Flash
After you choose a flavor at Chills 360, you won’t see anyone scooping out ice cream into a bowl. Instead, your chosen ingredients will be set onto a flat metal surface and a milky substance will be poured on top of them. As the ingredients are finely chopped and mixed together, you will notice the mixture is slowly starting to solidify. The steel plates used to create ice cream rolls are chilled to -16 degrees Fahrenheit, (well below freezing), so that the ingredients in your ice cream will combine evenly and will crystallize until the substance is nice and creamy. The concept is just like a hibachi grill, where a chef quickly and artistically fries your food right in front of you. In the photo, banana, Nutella, and milk are mixed together on the cold plate to create the flavor “Monkey Business.”
Spread Out
Once the ingredients have been properly combined, they are spread flat across the surface of the steel plate so that they will reach just the right texture. Your stir-fried ice cream chef will write your name on top of the mixture in the sauce of your choice: chocolate, caramel, or strawberry.
Rolled Up
Now that your ice cream is frozen to perfection and laying flat across the metal surface, it can be scraped away into beautiful little rolls. About five of these will rest side by side in your ice cream bowl, where they will then be adorned with toppings like fruit, cookies, gummies, or even cotton candy.
Served Up (With a Smile)
Tada! This is what your insta-worthy ice cream rolls will look like. A bowl this size costs $7, which is admittedly a little bit pricey for ice cream. But you are paying for the experience of witnessing this ice cream creation take form moreso than the sugary substance itself. The owners of Chills 360 also take great care to replenish their fruit and dairy products regularly to ensure that every ingredient is completely fresh.
